The plot is nonsensical, which is intentional, but it's also just plain bad. (And the text is annoying to scroll through, which really doesn't help.)The controls are sluggish, too - there's a few frames between you hitting the jump button and the character actually jumping. And the difficulty ramps up quickly, which isn't fun. So you mash buttons (there's only one attack button, no interesting combos!) until you win or die, occasionally maneuvering to avoid the worst of the attackers. And there aren't any save slots - just codes. I get that this is recreating the Games Of Yore, but I *played* those, and save codes were the feature I missed least.. Cool retro style game, beat it in like a hour tho. One that'll appeal to all beat em up fans, especially those of the charming 16 BIT era. Check out my video at 04:39 for an overview of Coffee Crisis.https://youtu.be/x53tS4YLXiM?t=279. Thumbs down...it has potential but needs some big improvements. This is far from Streets of Rage 2 or Scott Pilgrim the game. First off and my biggest complaint is you die way to fast/enemies take too much damage to kill. On top of that, one second youll fight 3 or 4 enemies, the next screen you face over a dozen all swarming you at once. Some stages tended to drag on and on, normal difficulty was just too much of a slog and cheap, switched to easy and spammed the spinning special move(along with watching my health) to get through the game. Charged attacks are pointless because of the enemy swarms, you cant block/evade and there is a slight delay when jump kicking as well. Even picking up weapons just takes too long. There is also no "arcade" mode, so youll have to either watch or skip the cutscenes...and on the topic of story, im not entirely convinced 2 baristas listen to heavy metal let alone know how to fight. The hud is a mess too. I had no idea how many lives i had, or how much health i had until about 45 min into the game. Where it *should* be lies a combo gauge because...i guess the devs though that's the most important thing, right?? Your health is a thin yellow half circle on the left side and your lives are displayed as coffee bags- in the top middle of the screen. The combo gauge and life should be switched and the number of lives displayed under the life bar. I love the graphics, the soundtrack is really good and it controls ok. I just hope they fix most of this stuff before the eventual Switch/PS4 ports and come back to update the Steam port as well.. SUMMARY: Buy it when it's on sale, preferably for $1-$3. It's not worth $10PROS:The art & music are GREAT, and I love the streamer-vote option. Some of the weird elements of the game add a nice touch of humor & entertainment.Besides that, I'm sorry to say it doesn't have much going for it.CONS: * The characters are not balanced: Ashley plays fine, but Nick is so slow it becomes impossible to dodge certain enemy attacks. Any benefits he may have in durability are made moot by this fact. * Enemy hitboxes are innacurate. It's easy to be SLIGHTLY above/below an enemy, and the his will not land. * Several bosses attack so frequently, it becomes near-impossible to attack them without taking damage. * Many attacks that deal knockback, such as the charge-attack, deal no extra damage. This means it's actually faster to button-mash to defeat an opponent. *** Randomized modifiers. They can be fun sometimes, but the option to turn them off would be a GODSEND. Sometimes they help, but most of the time they make the game harder, or sometimes near unbeatable; it feels like a crutch to increase difficulty where enemy design or layout would be key. If you get the unlucky draw of having a HORDE of enemies attack you, all with enhanced damage, the only way to get past it is to sacrifice many, many lives. * The story is not only rough, it is narrated poorly. I have a rough idea of events, but instead of a story its more like glimpses into someone's fever-dream.WRAPUP: MegaCat, you've got something here. It's a start, and it can be fun. But you need some BALANCE to this. That's your biggest issue; balancing characters, balancing waves of enemies. If you polish it up a bit, and throw in ways to execute special moves/combos, this could be GOLDEN.But, as it stands now, it's not.. Coffee and rock'n'roll! Childhood and Sega. Very fun and challenging game. It's nice to play yourself and with a friend. Beautiful graphics and great music, it's nice to spend time in the game.
